Nodusfall is planned as a free-to-play game, but the developers say playable characters will not be obtained through random draws. Characters are intended to unlock through continued play, while cosmetic monetization is being considered. No complete economy, weapon-gacha policy, battle pass, currency list, or probability system has been announced, so “no character gacha” is more accurate than claiming the entire game is gacha-free.
The short answer to “Is Nodusfall gacha?” needs one important boundary. The development team has rejected random draws as the way players obtain characters. That makes Nodusfall different from the character-banner model associated with several other HoYoverse games. It does not yet prove that every item, cosmetic, weapon, upgrade, or future system will avoid randomized monetization.
PC Gamer published a direct developer statement describing Nodusfall as a free-to-play, long-term game. The same statement says characters are not obtained through random draws and that the team hopes players will unlock this core gameplay experience through continued play. GAME Watch reported the same model after speaking with the development team at gamescom: free-to-play with item purchases, playable characters earned through continued play rather than character gacha, and cosmetic items under consideration as an important monetization path.
Is there character gacha in Nodusfall?
According to the current developer statement, no. Playable characters are not intended to come from random draws. That is the clearest answer available and is strong enough to separate Nodusfall from a traditional character-collection gacha loop.
The wording matters. “Through continued play” describes the intended direction, but it does not yet explain the unlock tasks. Characters might be tied to story progress, account milestones, contracts, resources, challenges, or another system. No unlock cost, time estimate, duplicate mechanic, rarity ladder, fragment requirement, or launch roster has been published.
Players should therefore expect earned character access, but should not rely on invented details about how quickly every character can be obtained. A launch guide will need the final in-game unlock screen and economy before it can compare grind time or recommend an efficient route.
Is Nodusfall free-to-play?
Yes, based on development-team statements recorded by multiple gamescom reports. Free-to-play means players are not expected to buy the base game before starting. It does not mean every cosmetic or service is free, and it does not describe the final regional storefront, account requirements, or optional purchases.
GAME Watch characterizes the model as free-to-play with item purchases. PC Gamer records the developers calling it a long-term game. Together, those descriptions point toward an ongoing live-service structure, but HoYoverse has not yet published a launch shop, price list, seasonal plan, premium currency, subscription, battle pass, stamina system, or paid expansion policy.
What monetization is confirmed?
The current public record is small enough to show in one table.
| Question | Current answer | Evidence state |
|---|---|---|
| Base-game price | Free-to-play planned | Developer statement |
| Character random draws | No | Developer statement |
| Character unlock method | Continued play | Direction confirmed; exact method unknown |
| Cosmetic purchases | Being considered as an important avenue | Developer statement |
| Weapon gacha | Not announced | Unknown |
| Cosmetic gacha | Not announced | Unknown |
| Battle pass | Not announced | Unknown |
| Premium currency | Not announced | Unknown |
| Energy or stamina | Not announced | Unknown |
| Paid convenience items | Not announced | Unknown |
“Cosmetic monetization is being considered” is not the same as a finished cosmetic shop. It also does not establish whether cosmetics would be sold directly, bundled, earned, placed in a pass, or randomized. Those details remain open until a first-party economy announcement or a public test exposes the relevant interfaces.
Why are some headlines calling it non-gacha?
For many players, “gacha game” primarily means that playable characters are locked behind chance-based banners. Removing that mechanism changes a major part of how a roster is acquired and why players spend. It is reasonable for headlines to emphasize that Nodusfall is not a typical HoYoverse gacha game.
The most precise site-wide label is still no announced character gacha. It communicates the developer commitment without extending it to systems that have not been disclosed. If HoYoverse later confirms that weapons, cosmetics, and every progression category also avoid random draws, this guide can adopt broader language with evidence.
How could character unlocks affect co-op?
The gamescom build gave its four participants different roles and character mechanics. PC Gamer described a tank, a ranged healer, melee pressure, and ranged pressure, with characters offering meaningfully different styles rather than behaving as blank avatars defined only by their weapons. When party roles matter, dependable character access also affects whether groups can assemble the role mix they want.
Unlocking characters through play could let groups plan around progression rather than luck. That is a potential benefit, not yet a measured result. We do not know whether every role is available at the start, how long later characters take to unlock, whether temporary trials exist, or whether new post-launch characters use the same rules.
What should players watch next?
The next useful evidence will be a formal monetization FAQ, public test terms, in-game shop footage, or a developer explanation of character progression. A complete answer should identify exact unlock requirements, whether duplicate rewards exist, what can be bought with money, and whether any random-draw system applies outside the character roster.
Until then, avoid both extremes. It is inaccurate to call Nodusfall a conventional character gacha after the developers explicitly rejected random character draws. It is also too early to promise a completely RNG-free economy.
